Miami's AI Infrastructure Has a Neighborhood Problem
The AI boom is increasingly becoming a physical infrastructure story.
Behind every chatbot, image generator and AI application is a growing network of data centers consuming electricity, requiring cooling, connecting to fiber networks and, in some cases, reshaping the communities where they are built.
Miami is no exception.
The region already has a substantial data-center industry. DataCenterMap currently lists 41 facilities in its Miami market, while FloridaDataCenters.org counts 27 operational data centers across Miami-Dade County.
Those figures should not be treated as contradictory. The two sources use different geographic and status criteria, so they are not directly comparable. What they do establish is that Miami-Dade already has a meaningful data-center footprint, and that footprint is becoming increasingly relevant as demand for AI infrastructure grows.
One of the most closely watched examples is MIA-1, an artificial intelligence data center being developed by Iron Mountain in Westview.
The $150 million, 150,000-square-foot project broke ground in February 2025 at 2925 N.W. 120th Terrace. The site is in Westview, a predominantly Black, unincorporated community in Miami-Dade County.
And that has made the project about considerably more than servers.
Why Westview Is Paying Attention
Residents have raised concerns about how the project was approved and how much notice the surrounding community received.
Because the property was already zoned for industrial use, the project did not require the kind of broader zoning change that might have triggered wider public scrutiny. Notices were reportedly sent to properties within a 500-foot radius, leaving residents outside that boundary unaware of the development until later.
That has become one of the central complaints surrounding MIA-1.
The issue isn't necessarily whether data centers should be built. It is whether communities should have a meaningful opportunity to understand what is being built next door before construction begins.
That distinction matters as Miami-Dade considers how much more digital infrastructure it wants to accommodate.
Data Centers Aren't All AI Data Centers
There is an important distinction that can get lost in the current debate.
A data center is not automatically an AI data center.
Traditional facilities can host cloud computing, websites, enterprise software, financial systems, telecommunications infrastructure and countless other digital services. AI workloads are particularly demanding because training and running large models requires enormous amounts of specialized computing capacity.
That can translate into significantly different infrastructure requirements.
MIA-1 is specifically being developed as an AI-ready facility, making it part of the infrastructure race behind the current AI boom.
That is why projects like this deserve to be examined separately from Miami's broader data-center inventory.
The question isn't simply whether Miami has "too many data centers." It is what kind of infrastructure is being built, where it is being built and what demands it places on the surrounding community.
The Environmental Question
Residents have raised concerns about noise, air pollution and the facility's demand for electricity and other infrastructure.
Backup diesel generators are one point of concern. Large data centers need backup power systems because even a brief interruption can be extremely disruptive to the computing infrastructure inside the facility.
Water and electricity are another part of the debate.
AI data centers can require substantial power capacity, while cooling systems can create additional resource demands depending on their design. Those requirements become particularly important in regions where population growth is already putting pressure on utilities.
Iron Mountain has said the MIA-1 project will operate using 100% carbon-free energy.
That is an important part of the company's position, but it doesn't eliminate every question about the project's local impact. Carbon-free electricity does not automatically mean zero noise, zero infrastructure demand or zero environmental footprint.
The more useful debate is therefore not whether data centers are inherently good or bad.
It is whether their local costs and benefits are being measured honestly.
Who Gets the Jobs?
This is where the economic case becomes more complicated.
Data-center projects can create employment, but the jobs are not all the same.
During construction, projects can support electricians, mechanical contractors, construction workers and other tradespeople.
Once operational, a facility can require facility managers, IT infrastructure specialists, network and systems technicians, security personnel and maintenance staff.
But the number and type of permanent jobs matters.
For MIA-1 specifically, the Miami-Dade Beacon Council has said the project is expected to create 30 jobs with average salaries of at least $71,733.
That is a meaningful economic benefit, particularly if those positions create opportunities for people in the surrounding area. But it also illustrates an important distinction: a large data center can represent a substantial capital investment without becoming a major local employer.
The economic proposition is therefore different from a factory or office development employing hundreds or thousands of people.
A data center can generate construction activity, infrastructure investment and relatively high-paying technical positions while maintaining a comparatively small permanent workforce.
For communities hosting these facilities, the relevant question is not simply "How much is being invested?"
It is "How much of that investment becomes lasting economic opportunity for people who live here?"
That is a reasonable question for MIA-1 and for future projects across Miami-Dade.
The Utility Question
There is another issue that is harder to answer locally: who ultimately pays for the additional infrastructure required to support large computing facilities?
Data centers are major electricity customers, and AI is increasing the amount of computing capacity companies want to deploy.
Residents in communities around data-center projects across the United States have raised concerns that expanding power infrastructure could eventually affect utility costs.
That does not mean every new data center automatically causes household electricity bills to rise. The economics depend on how infrastructure is financed, utility rate structures, power availability and the specific project.
But it is a legitimate question to ask as Miami's AI infrastructure footprint grows.
If the region wants the investment, tax base and technological prestige associated with AI infrastructure, policymakers also need to be transparent about who pays for the roads, power capacity and other infrastructure that makes it possible.
A Bigger Question for Miami
The Westview debate is likely to become more important, not less.
Miami wants to position itself as an AI hub. That requires more than startups, venture capital and university research. It requires physical infrastructure capable of supporting increasingly power-hungry computing systems.
Data centers are part of that infrastructure.
But the economic-development argument becomes much stronger when communities can see tangible benefits from hosting them.
That could mean construction employment, permanent technical jobs, local contracting opportunities, tax revenue or community investment.
It also means transparency.
Residents should know what is being built, how much power it will require, what backup systems will operate on site, what environmental safeguards are in place and how many permanent jobs the facility is expected to create.
Those are reasonable questions whether someone is enthusiastic about AI or deeply skeptical of it.
What This Means for Miami
Miami doesn't have to choose between supporting AI infrastructure and taking community concerns seriously.
In fact, doing both may be essential if the region wants to build a sustainable AI economy.
The MIA-1 project illustrates the tension clearly. Miami needs the computing infrastructure that powers its growing technology economy. At the same time, the communities hosting that infrastructure have a legitimate interest in understanding its costs and benefits.
That makes Westview more than a local zoning dispute.
It is an early test of how Miami handles the physical consequences of its AI ambitions.
The winners of the AI infrastructure boom will include the companies building models, the operators running data centers and the investors financing them.
The harder question is whether the communities underneath that infrastructure will feel like winners too.
