Artificial intelligence is no longer being treated as a specialist subject reserved for computer science students.
Instead, universities are beginning to treat AI literacy much like digital literacy: a core skill that every graduate should possess, regardless of their degree.
Miami University in Ohio has become one of the latest institutions to formalize that shift, announcing plans to integrate AI competencies across every undergraduate academic department by the 2027–2028 academic year.
Rather than requiring every student to study artificial intelligence as a standalone subject, the university's AI in the Majors initiative embeds AI directly into existing disciplines, allowing each department to determine how the technology is most relevant to its profession.
AI Becomes Part of Every Degree
The rollout begins during the 2026–2027 academic year with 13 volunteer departments, representing nearly 5,000 students.
Those departments include accountancy, chemistry, mathematics, electrical and computer engineering, anthropology, educational psychology, physics, statistics, speech pathology, teaching, languages and literature, art, and sport leadership.
A second group of departments will follow during 2027 before the remaining academic departments complete implementation in the 2027–2028 academic year.
Rather than imposing a standard curriculum, faculty members are designing discipline-specific AI competencies that reflect the needs of each profession.
Teaching AI in Context
University leaders say the goal is not simply teaching students how to use ChatGPT or other generative AI tools.
Instead, departments will integrate AI into existing coursework while emphasizing critical thinking, ethics, professional judgment and responsible use.
For example, introductory courses may focus on understanding AI capabilities and limitations, while senior clinical or professional courses explore how AI supports documentation, decision-making and research within specific industries.
That approach recognizes that AI skills look very different for an accountant, an engineer, a teacher or a healthcare professional.
Beyond Computer Science
The initiative builds on Miami University's broader AI strategy, which already includes a bachelor's degree in Artificial Intelligence, a campus-wide AI Fundamentals course and multiple faculty development programs.
University leaders argue AI has become sufficiently embedded across society that graduates need to understand both its opportunities and its limitations before entering the workforce.
Rather than treating AI as an elective, the university is positioning it as a foundational professional competency across virtually every discipline.
A Growing Trend
Miami University is far from alone.
Universities across the United States are expanding AI programs, introducing new degrees, investing in research infrastructure and increasingly weaving AI into non-technical disciplines.
The shift reflects employer demand for graduates who can work effectively alongside AI systems rather than simply understand the underlying technology.
