Everyone talks about Miami's AI startups. Far fewer people are watching what's happening inside South Florida's universities.
Across Coral Gables, Miami and Boca Raton, research institutions are quietly building the infrastructure, talent and breakthroughs that could shape the region's AI economy for years to come—long before many of those innovations become commercial products or venture-backed companies.

- 10 featured AI research centers
- Home to TRITON, one of Florida's leading university supercomputers
- Federal, NSF and AUKUS-backed research projects
- Research spanning healthcare, hurricanes, robotics, cybersecurity, autonomy and defense
University of Miami
Frost Institute for Data Science & Computing (IDSC)
The Frost Institute for Data Science & Computing (IDSC) is home to TRITON, the University of Miami's supercomputer, and supports AI research through internships, workshops and its annual Big Data Conference.
Why it matters: Compute is the foundation of modern AI. TRITON gives University of Miami researchers access to high-performance computing infrastructure that many universities cannot match.
Rosenstiel School Climate and Hurricane AI
Researchers at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science are using artificial intelligence to identify tropical easterly waves—the cloud-and-wind systems that can develop into hurricanes—and to better understand why some storms rapidly intensify.
Why it matters: For South Florida, AI-powered hurricane forecasting is more than academic research. It has direct implications for emergency planning, forecasting and public safety.
Florida International University
FIU AI Center of Excellence (FAICE)
Located within FIU's Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences, the FIU AI Center of Excellence brings together researchers working across cybersecurity, robotics, smart infrastructure and generative AI.
Why it matters: FAICE serves as FIU's central AI research hub, encouraging collaboration across disciplines rather than isolated departmental projects.
FIU Robotics Academy
Supported by a $1 million National Science Foundation grant, the FIU Robotics Academy develops training tools and educational resources that help prepare the architecture, engineering and construction industries for increasing automation.
Why it matters: The academy creates a direct pipeline between university research and one of South Florida's largest industries.
Florida Atlantic University
Center for Connected Autonomy and AI (CA-AI)
Led by Dimitris Pados, FAU's Center for Connected Autonomy and AI researches autonomous systems operating across land, sea, air and space, supported by significant federal and Department of Defense funding.
Why it matters: Few university centers combine AI, autonomy and defense research at this scale.
AUKUS Maritime AI Project
In June 2026, CA-AI secured a $1 million award through the AUKUS Maritime Innovation Challenge to develop next-generation underwater communications for autonomous underwater vehicles and seabed sensing systems.
Why it matters: The project places South Florida researchers at the center of an international defense technology partnership involving the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.
FAU AI Engineering Lab
Launching in 2026, the AI Engineering Lab focuses on turning theoretical AI research into practical engineering solutions through industry collaboration and workforce development.
Why it matters: The lab is designed to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial deployment.
FAU I-SENSE
The Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering develops sensing technologies and AI systems capable of interpreting complex environmental data, supporting applications ranging from autonomous vehicles to intelligent infrastructure.
Why it matters: I-SENSE provides much of the sensing expertise that underpins FAU's wider autonomy research.
Miami Dade College
MDC AI Innovation Hub
Opened in March 2026 at Kendall Campus, the 7,000-square-foot AI Innovation Hub is Miami Dade College's first comprehensive instructional facility dedicated to artificial intelligence, developed with support from Intel, Google, Microsoft and IBM.
Why it matters: The facility focuses on preparing students with practical AI skills that employers need today.
MDC AI Center Network
The Kendall Hub builds on Miami Dade College's AI Centers at North Campus (2022) and Wolfson Campus (2023), creating a three-campus network dedicated to AI education.
Why it matters: MDC is expanding AI workforce development at a scale few community colleges have attempted, helping meet growing demand for AI technicians and practitioners across South Florida.
Building South Florida's AI Future
South Florida's AI ecosystem is about far more than startup funding rounds. Across the region, universities and colleges are investing in supercomputing, robotics, climate science, autonomy, defense research and workforce development that together form the foundation of a growing AI economy.
This article is the first in MAIN's ongoing South Florida AI Ecosystem series, highlighting the companies, research institutions, investors and organizations shaping artificial intelligence across the region.
