A small Miami Beach company says it has landed its first utility customer, deploying AI entirely inside the operator's own security perimeter.

AirNode.ai, a venture of Strong Interactive, announced this week that it had deployed its system with a Southeastern U.S. utility, which it did not identify by name.

According to the company, no data ever leaves the customer's own infrastructure. The utility isn't named in the announcement.

What AirNode Says It Built

The pitch is straightforward. For some utilities and other regulated operators, sending sensitive operational data to external cloud AI services isn't an option, creating demand for systems that can run entirely within their own infrastructure. AirNode runs the model, the compute and the knowledge base entirely on-premise instead.

"AirNode's approach is to remove the cloud from the equation rather than trying to secure the pathway to it," said Jonathan Herman, AirNode's co-founder and CEO.

The company says the platform is scoped narrowly on purpose, covering things like compliance documentation, inspection readiness and engineering summaries, while deliberately staying out of actual plant systems and safety controls.

Strong Interactive itself is a small operation. Public startup databases put the parent company's disclosed funding at roughly $55,000 to date, making the utility deployment an interesting early commercial milestone for a company entering a market dominated by much larger infrastructure vendors.

A Fast Pivot Worth Noting

AirNode's own public description of itself has changed considerably in a short window. A press release from May 2026 described the company as focused on "intelligent automation, decentralized technologies, and scalable digital ecosystems," part of a broader Strong Interactive portfolio built around blockchain, mixed reality and Web3 products.

By its August 2026 announcement, that framing is gone entirely, replaced by "Secure AI Infrastructure Platform for regulated industries," with no mention of blockchain at all.

That's worth noting without necessarily reading too much into it. Small companies reposition around whatever market is actually buying, and air-gapped AI for utilities is a real, growing category right now, regardless of what AirNode was calling itself three months ago.

The Trend Behind the Pitch

The underlying problem AirNode describes is real, independent of any one company's marketing. Utilities, hospitals and financial institutions are increasingly looking for ways to use AI without sending sensitive data to an outside cloud provider.

That gap has created genuine demand for on-premise and air-gapped AI deployment across regulated sectors nationally, which makes a small Miami studio's early entry notable on its own.

What This Means for Miami

Miami's AI scene isn't only Exowatt-scale raises and $600 million SPAC deals. It's also small operators like Strong Interactive, running lean and pivoting quickly toward markets where they see a real commercial opportunity.

Air-gapped AI is an especially interesting one. Utilities, healthcare providers, financial institutions and other regulated organizations are looking for ways to use AI without moving sensitive information into external cloud environments. That creates a market for infrastructure companies that can work within those constraints rather than asking customers to change them.

For Miami, that's a useful part of the AI story. Not every company needs a huge funding round or a giant valuation to be worth watching. Sometimes the interesting milestone is much simpler: a small local team identifies a difficult problem, builds a product around it, and gets its first serious customer.

AirNode says it has done exactly that. If the company can turn that first utility deployment into a repeatable business, it could become an interesting example of how small Miami AI companies are finding commercial opportunities in markets dominated by much larger players.
