Most AI funding goes to chatbots and coding tools. This round went to a company that wants to run your restaurant's website instead.
Owner, an eight-year-old San Francisco company, raised $240 million in new funding this week. Goldman Sachs Growth Equity led the round, valuing the company at $2.3 billion.
What Owner Actually Sells
Owner builds AI tools aimed at local businesses rather than enterprise customers. Its platform automates website building, online and phone ordering, mobile apps and customer support.
That's a meaningfully different customer than most AI funding targets. Restaurants, salons and independent retailers rarely have an engineering team to build these tools themselves.
The round was one of the week's ten largest, according to Crunchbase's weekly funding tracker. Most of that list skewed toward AI-focused startups, though rounds overall ran smaller than in recent weeks.
Miami's Small Business Market Is Exactly This Pitch
Miami has one of the country's largest concentrations of small, independently owned businesses, spanning restaurants, retail and personal services. That's precisely the customer segment Owner is chasing.
It's also a market Miami's own institutions are actively trying to prepare. The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce's Tech and Innovation Committee has run workshops this year built around one goal.
Helping small and mid-sized Miami businesses put practical AI tools to work.
The Chamber's sessions cover the same categories Owner sells into directly. Automating operations, streamlining customer service and staying competitive without a dedicated tech budget. National survey data backs up why that gap matters.
Intuit QuickBooks' 2026 AI Impact Report found 77% of small businesses now use AI regularly. That's up from 48% just eighteen months earlier. But a separate Thryv survey found 70% of business owners still feel they need more training to use it effectively.
The Gap Between Buying AI and Using It
That gap between adoption and confidence is exactly where a product like Owner is betting it can win. A local business doesn't need to understand a large language model.
It needs its website, phone orders and customer messages handled automatically, without hiring anyone new.
For Miami's restaurant and retail owners weighing the cost, Owner's $2.3 billion valuation is a signal. Investors think a lot of small businesses are about to say yes.
