Google DeepMind Shake-Up Puts AGI Pioneer Demis Hassabis in Strategy Role

The person who helped turn Google DeepMind into one of the world's leading AI research labs, Demis Hassabis is stepping back from running it.

Demis Hassabis will hand responsibility for Google DeepMind's daily operations to longtime deputy Koray Kavukcuoglu, while shifting into a broader role as chairman of Google DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet.

The move reflects more than a leadership reshuffle. It signals that Alphabet increasingly sees the race toward artificial general intelligence as a scientific and strategic challenge rather than simply a product development effort.

From CEO to Long-Term Strategy

Rather than overseeing day-to-day management, Hassabis will concentrate on AGI research, long-term scientific strategy and expanding AI applications across Alphabet.

He also plans to devote more attention to Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's AI drug discovery business, which he has repeatedly described as one of AI's most important real-world applications.

In a message to employees, Hassabis said he believes AGI is approaching rapidly and argued that the decisions made over the next few years could have profound consequences for humanity.

He also pointed to the company's continued model development, including work on the unreleased Gemini 4 system.

A Familiar Face Takes Control

Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously Google DeepMind's chief technology officer and Alphabet's chief AI architect, will assume responsibility for the organisation's day-to-day operations.

Rather than becoming CEO, he will serve as senior vice president of Google DeepMind and report directly to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.

His responsibilities include leading development of Google's Gemini models, now the centrepiece of the company's AI strategy across Search, Workspace, Android and Cloud.

Another AI Leader Departs

The leadership changes come alongside another significant departure.

Jeff Dean, one of Google's most influential engineers and the company's chief scientist, is leaving after 27 years to co-found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on accelerating machine learning, scientific research and engineering through AI.

Dean is joined by several prominent former Google researchers, including Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le.

Although the company will operate independently, Alphabet will remain closely connected through investment and cloud infrastructure support.

According to Dean, working outside a publicly traded company offers greater freedom to pursue long-term scientific goals without the same commercial pressures.

Pressure Builds Around Gemini

The reshuffle arrives during an important period for Google's AI ambitions.

Reports suggest Gemini 3.5 Pro has slipped well beyond its original launch schedule, while Google has also experienced several high-profile departures across its AI research organisation.

Competition has intensified as OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies continue releasing new frontier models at a rapid pace.

Google maintains that it still possesses one of the industry's strongest advantages through its combination of research talent, computing infrastructure and global product distribution.
