A profile from Chinese outlet Jizhou Studio, reported by the South China Morning Post, follows three ordinary workers who taught themselves to build AI tools with no coding background at all.
What drove them wasn't really the tools' usefulness. It was fear of falling behind.
Building Tools Out of Anxiety, Not Ambition
Congcong, a 46-year-old former product manager, built a spoken English trainer and a homework-monitoring bot using ChatGPT, worried that others would master new AI tools before she did.
When her daughter faced verbal bullying at school, the girl turned to the AI chatbot for advice. It reassured her she wasn't to blame and suggested how to respond, the kind of instant support a busy parent isn't always available to give in the moment.
Congcong's own reaction wasn't simple relief. She recognized that an AI system offering constant positive feedback could foster a dependency that goes well beyond what the tool was built for.
That reaction is worth sitting with. She's not describing regret about building the tool, or a wish that her daughter hadn't used it in a difficult moment. She's describing a more specific worry: that a system designed to always sound supportive might, over time, become the default source of comfort instead of one option among several.
Heisen, a 36-year-old media editor, used AI coding tools to build his mother a meal-planning app, describing the features he wanted in plain language rather than writing any code himself.
The app never actually replaced the family's old routine. His mother still asks him daily what to cook, and still reaches for her handwritten notebook more often than the app.
The Tools Work. The Anxiety Doesn't Go Away.
Lucy, a 40-year-old in internet operations, built an AI wardrobe tool that organizes her clothes and recommends outfits. It genuinely improved her daily efficiency.
It didn't ease her worry about work. Her employer treats AI-driven productivity as a competitive priority, and she said managers now routinely ask whether a given task could simply be handed to AI instead.
What a Psychologist Says Is Actually at Risk
Peng Kaiping, a psychology and cognitive science professor at Tsinghua University, argues that some AI-related anxiety can be genuinely useful, sharpening awareness during a period of real uncertainty rather than something to eliminate entirely.
His concern isn't job loss alone. He warns that leaning on AI too heavily can create a false sense of knowledge while quietly weakening attention, memory and deep thinking, and that highly personalized AI systems risk dulling the social skills they're designed to substitute for.
His recommendation is to keep using AI while deliberately building the traits it can't replicate: empathy, aesthetic judgment, intrinsic motivation, and critical thinking. He also pushed back on workplaces measuring everything through rigid KPIs and time efficiency, arguing that framework leaves little room for exactly those human qualities to develop.
Lucy found her own answer somewhere else entirely. She picked up tai chi, a practice her late father loved, as a way to slow down in a culture racing toward AI-driven speed. Whatever AI can imitate about a voice or a personality, she's found, it can't bring back a relationship that's already gone.
What This Means for Miami

What's different here is the psychological framing. Building an AI tool doesn't automatically resolve the anxiety that motivated it, and Peng's advice, keep using the tools while deliberately protecting the human skills they can't replace, is worth as much to a Miami parent or manager navigating the same pressure as it is to the workers profiled in Beijing or Shanghai.
