Three defense tech announcements from eMerge Americas in two weeks isn’t a coincidence. It’s a pipeline being built in public.
eMerge Americas just opened applications for its second NatSec Veteran Pitch Competition. Six veteran-led, dual-use startups will pitch defense investors and acquisition experts. The prize: a Demo Day slot at PortMiami, the day before eMerge Americas opens in March.
What Makes This Different From a Pitch Night?
Most pitch competitions end with a trophy and a LinkedIn post. This one ends with an actual door into procurement. Winners get eMerge’s accelerator fast-track, exhibition space in the NatSec Pavilion and curated introductions to investors and government buyers.
That structure matters more than the prize money. Defense contracts move through relationships and clearance, not cold outreach. A competition that hands winners direct introductions to acquisition experts solves the actual bottleneck.
The First Cohort Already Has Results
The inaugural competition ran in February. Its winners read like a dual-use technology sampler. TERN builds satellite-free navigation for when GPS fails. Glīd Technologies automates road-to-rail logistics. SplashOne Robotics builds autonomous maritime systems.
Judges included Kelly Perdew of Moonshots Capital and Christian Ford of DLA Piper. Also on the panel: Tip Myers of Marque Ventures and Rusty Isaacs of Stony Lonesome Group. That’s a bench of investors and lawyers who actually work in defense tech. Not general startup judges brought in for the day.
The Details for This Round
Applications close October 10, with finalists announced October 16. The virtual pitch event runs November 4 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Eastern.
Eligibility is specific. Startups must be U.S.-based, founded within the last three years, and have a working MVP. They also need at least two full-time team members and less than $1 million raised. The founder or a C-level executive delivering the pitch must be a veteran, or an active or reserve service member.
Why This Keeps Happening Right Now
The timing fits a pattern. Miami venture studio Misfit Labs announced a partnership with Fort Myers consultancy Black Mountain Strategies on September 18. Together, they’re building a pipeline for South Florida founders launching dual-use startups. eMerge also announced its NatSec Pavilion around the same time.
MAIN has covered Miami’s broader defense tech push as a recent convergence, not a decades-old trend. The region’s military installations aren’t new. The venture capital, corporate relocations and institutional programming built around them are.
A pitch competition, an accelerator pipeline and an exhibition pavilion aren’t three separate initiatives. They’re stages of one funnel eMerge is building. Find veteran founders, fund them, then hand them government-facing introductions before their first booth ever opens.
The Bigger Bet
None of this guarantees any of these startups land a real contract. Pitch competitions produce demo days, not purchase orders.
But eMerge is building the infrastructure that makes landing one more likely than it was a year ago. For a founder with a working MVP and a veteran on the team, that infrastructure is now specific and dated. It’s not a vague promise about Miami’s potential.
Applications close October 10. The rest of the pipeline is already running.
