A Chicago school just made national news for replacing lecture time with AI. Miami's version of the same bet has been running for over a year, and just added a third campus.
Alpha Chicago opened this week. It's the newest location in a private school chain built around AI-compressed academics and a $55,000 price tag. Miami got there first.
What the Alpha Model Actually Does
Students at Alpha schools spend roughly two hours a day on core academics through personalized, AI-driven software. The rest of the school day goes to workshops on leadership, entrepreneurship and other skills. The company says traditional schools struggle to fit these in.
Adults called "guides" replace traditional teachers. Rather than lecturing a full classroom, they mentor students individually while AI software handles pacing and instruction on core material.
"Because AI and adaptive software handle routine academic instruction, Guides can spend more time supporting each student individually," Alpha's website states.
Miami Isn't New to This Model
Alpha School already runs an established K-11 campus in Miami's Glenvar Heights neighborhood, charging $50,000 a year for 64 students. A Palm Beach Gardens location serves South Florida families further north.
This fall, the chain adds a third South Florida campus. Alpha Miami Beach opens with $65,000 annual tuition, the highest in Miami-Dade. It sits on a site a local developer bought specifically with a school like Alpha in mind.
A Miami Beach Deal Built Around This Exact Bet
The Miami Beach campus sits on the former Papillon Montessori site in Normandy Isle. It's a one-acre property the developer purchased for $19 million.
The developer said he wants to partner with a "well-regarded school operator," specifically one focused on "modern-day learning practices" like teaching with AI. Alpha fit that description directly, and the transaction closed in June.
Why the Model Keeps Expanding
Alpha School has drawn support from high-profile investors, including Bill Ackman. It continues opening new campuses nationally on the strength of that backing.
Founder MacKenzie Price has described the approach as ensuring students master concepts before moving to new material. That's rather than advancing an entire class at the same pace regardless of readiness.
What This Means for Miami's Private School Market
Chicago's Alpha campus is generating national headlines this week as a novelty. In Miami-Dade, the same model is already competing directly against legacy private schools for tuition dollars.
Whether $65,000 a year for two hours of AI-driven instruction outperforms a traditional classroom is still an open question nationally. Miami's private school market is where that question is already being tested against real enrollment numbers, not headlines.
