But there is another question that deserves considerably more attention:
Who is going to build everything AI needs?
The answer is not another chatbot.
It is electricians, welders, construction workers, HVAC technicians, engineers, network installers and other skilled tradespeople.
AI Has A Physical Footprint
The AI boom may look digital from the outside, but the infrastructure behind it is intensely physical.
Data centers need buildings. Buildings need electrical systems, cooling, plumbing and networking. Those systems need to be installed, maintained and repaired.
And as AI companies spend enormous sums expanding computing capacity, demand for that physical workforce is increasing.
The original reporting points to a broader shortage already affecting the US economy. McKinsey estimates that for every new hire in skilled trades such as carpentry, electrical work and welding, roughly 20 positions remain unfilled.
That shortage could become more significant as AI infrastructure expands.
The Jobs AI Cannot Easily Automate
AI can write code.
It can generate marketing campaigns.
It can analyze documents and increasingly perform sophisticated knowledge work.
But it cannot simply walk into a construction site and install a high-voltage electrical system.
That distinction matters.
The AI economy requires a physical layer beneath the software: power generation, transmission, data centers, cooling systems, fiber networks and construction.
The more computing capacity companies build, the more physical infrastructure has to exist around it.
AI may automate work at the screen while creating work at the construction site.
High Schools Have A Role To Play
The source article argues that America's public high schools should expand skilled-trades education, pointing to research from NORC at the University of Chicago showing strong support among voters, parents and students.
Ninety-five percent of voters surveyed said more opportunities to study skilled trades in high school would better prepare students for careers, while 84% supported increased government funding.
There is also an important perception shift taking place.
A skilled-trades career is increasingly less about being left behind by the technology economy and more about participating directly in the infrastructure that makes that economy possible.
For students worried that AI will eliminate traditional career paths, that is a significant distinction.
What This Means For Miami
The AI jobs debate is often presented as a threat to the middle class: software developers, analysts, marketers, administrators and other white-collar workers increasingly wondering whether AI can do some of what they do today.
But the physical AI economy is creating a very different labor market.
Data centers need electricians. Cooling systems need HVAC technicians. Construction projects need welders, plumbers, equipment operators and other skilled workers. Randstad's US data shows demand for skilled-trades roles accelerating alongside AI infrastructure investment.
That creates an intriguing possibility for Miami.
The city's AI strategy should not be built entirely around producing more people who sit behind computers. It should also ask whether Miami can train the people who will build the physical infrastructure that those computers require.
That could become particularly important if AI-driven restructuring eventually hits white-collar employment harder than it hits physical trades.
The result could be an unusual reversal of the traditional economic narrative: the next AI boom may create some of its best middle-class opportunities for people who work with their hands.
Miami has an opportunity to get ahead of that shift by treating skilled-trades education as part of its AI strategy, not as an alternative to the technology economy, but as one of the things that makes the technology economy possible.
And this isn't theoretical. Meta has already committed $115 million to a free skilled-trades training program aimed at producing workers including electricians, welders, plumbers and fiber technicians for the data-center economy.
The people building Miami's AI future may not be the people developing its AI models. They may be the people carrying the tools.
