AEO/GEO: Reddit's ChatGPT Citations Collapsed. Nobody Knows Why Yet. Chatbots

Summary: Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations fell 86.4% between mid-July and mid-August, according to tracking data from GEO analytics firm Promptwatch, but the popular explanation tying the drop to a ChatGPT search change on August 8 doesn't match the actual timing, since Reddit's citation share didn't collapse until six days later on August 14. A similar drop happened in September 2025 and was ultimately traced to a Google search parameter change unrelated to Reddit or OpenAI, a pattern worth remembering before CMOs change their Reddit strategy based on one vendor's citation tracking.

Everyone's blaming a ChatGPT search change for Reddit's citation collapse. The data from the same firm that found the collapse says that explanation has a timing problem.

Promptwatch found Reddit's ChatGPT citation share fell 86.4% in mid-August. Three other AI visibility firms reported similar drops independently.

The Numbers, Precisely

Reddit averaged a 3.83% citation share in ChatGPT Search from July 18 to August 7. That fell to 0.52% between August 14 and August 17.

The popular theory points to August 8, when ChatGPT changed how it runs background research. Promptwatch found ChatGPT's use of site-specific search queries jumped 46-fold that day, from 0.37% to 16.8% of all background searches.

"It is deliberately going to specific sites to pull information from them," said Promptwatch co-founder Klaas Foppen, describing the shift.

Here's the problem. That site-specific search behavior has stayed stable at roughly 16% to 17% since August 8.

Reddit's citation share didn't actually collapse until six days later, on August 14. Promptwatch's own data shows two separate drops, not one.

The first, smaller drop on August 8 roughly coincides with the search change. The sharper drop on August 14 doesn't line up with anything Promptwatch has identified yet.

Promptwatch itself calls the total decline "provisional." The firm hasn't ruled out a data-collection issue on its own end.

Separately, AI SEO researcher Suganthan Mohanadasan found ChatGPT is still regularly consulting Reddit behind the scenes. It's simply citing brand websites more often in the visible final answer.

That distinction matters for AEO practitioners specifically. A drop in visible citations isn't the same as a drop in Reddit's actual influence on how ChatGPT forms an answer.

This Happened Before, For a Different Reason

Reddit's ChatGPT citation share also collapsed once before, in September 2025. That drop eventually got traced to something unrelated to Reddit or OpenAI at all.

Google had removed a search parameter that many data providers relied on to pull deep search results.

G2's Kevin Indig argued the change made it harder for outside tools to reach those results, where Reddit threads often rank. He used appropriately hedged language, stopping short of confirming it as the definitive cause.

What This Means for Miami

For Miami CMOs and agencies running AEO strategies, this is a real lesson.

Don't overreact to a single vendor's tracked average. Check your own brand's actual citation trends before changing anything based on aggregate data like this.

Duolingo's CMO put it plainly to Business Insider: the company doesn't change strategy every time an algorithm shifts. AIVO's CEO countered that any strategy built on chasing one citation source is exposed to exactly this kind of swing.

Both points are right, and neither cancels the other out. Build your Reddit or AEO strategy around genuine audience value, not citation-chasing, and these swings become noise instead of a crisis.
